Props Research

In this post I will be talking about the props research for our film.

A prop is an object that is present in a film that is used by actors or as a way of conveying a message to the viewers. They can be everyday objects to signature weapons or tools used by a character. Which can also be of great significance to the plot of the film. An example of this type of prop is 'Black Hole' The black hole is a pierce of paper with a large black circle on it, which has mysterious properties; this also acts as the plot device.

The prop works alongside the set designer, costume designer and lighting designers, and on some occasions the sound designer. Over the course of film making the prop has developed a more important role and becomes as crucial as the sound and lighting.

In our film we do not have any props that can be considered true plot devices. With the only notable objects being Faiths pen at the interview, and the Glass in Faith's home that either smashes or is quickly caught in mid air depending on the sequence. The pen is significant because it is the reason why she bumps into Olly during the interview sequence.

There is also the watch or phone that is a main prop because the time is the reason why she bumps into Olly during the train sequence.

Each of our props mean something or represent something in our film:

  • Hair dryer, our female character uses this to show that she cares about her appearance and wants to look nice
  • Her jewellery does the same, however the jewellery that we are going to use will show that she is from a relatively rich background.
  • The formal wear would show them as dressed for an important interview.
  • Phone, this would be used as an alarm to wake up our protagonist, this is the prop that moves the prop forward.
  • The glass, this is what delays our protagonist, which is a major plot point, the delay causes her to miss her train and meet our love interest.
  • The pen, this is what acts as a conversation starter between our two characters.
This is our new props list, it shows what prop goes to who in which scene so it's easier to film faster.

In the next post I will be talking about our risk assessment for our filming.
