Test shots

In this post I will be exhibiting a test shot that we will be using in our filming

This is a test shot of the slow motion setting on the camera, we will be using this in our short film when we see the glass drop and smash.

In the next post I will be posting our animatic

Risk Assessment

In this post I will be posting a list of our risks on filming.

Props Research

In this post I will be talking about the props research for our film.

A prop is an object that is present in a film that is used by actors or as a way of conveying a message to the viewers. They can be everyday objects to signature weapons or tools used by a character. Which can also be of great significance to the plot of the film. An example of this type of prop is 'Black Hole' The black hole is a pierce of paper with a large black circle on it, which has mysterious properties; this also acts as the plot device.

The prop works alongside the set designer, costume designer and lighting designers, and on some occasions the sound designer. Over the course of film making the prop has developed a more important role and becomes as crucial as the sound and lighting.

In our film we do not have any props that can be considered true plot devices. With the only notable objects being Faiths pen at the interview, and the Glass in Faith's home that either smashes or is quickly caught in mid air depending on the sequence. The pen is significant because it is the reason why she bumps into Olly during the interview sequence.

There is also the watch or phone that is a main prop because the time is the reason why she bumps into Olly during the train sequence.

Each of our props mean something or represent something in our film:

  • Hair dryer, our female character uses this to show that she cares about her appearance and wants to look nice
  • Her jewellery does the same, however the jewellery that we are going to use will show that she is from a relatively rich background.
  • The formal wear would show them as dressed for an important interview.
  • Phone, this would be used as an alarm to wake up our protagonist, this is the prop that moves the prop forward.
  • The glass, this is what delays our protagonist, which is a major plot point, the delay causes her to miss her train and meet our love interest.
  • The pen, this is what acts as a conversation starter between our two characters.
This is our new props list, it shows what prop goes to who in which scene so it's easier to film faster.

In the next post I will be talking about our risk assessment for our filming.

Costume Research

In this post I will be talking about the costume research.

We have to consider costume design whether it is regular clothing or not each characters costume has an element of mise en scene, which defines the character and allows you to deduce there personality and there habits from the way they appear. After all you will be judging there character based on their looks before they even come up with dialogue.

For our film we have a man named Olly Brown and a woman, Faith Williams both quite young being early 20’s applying for a job interview but the woman is late for this interview. So with that basic information we can come up with a costume plot for this character.

Faith has been described as being charismatic, well-presented young woman who isn't aware that this job opportunity is going to change her life. so with this you can deduce that she is proud in her appearance and has a sense of symmetry. The most significant characteristic is that she is unaware of the impact this job may have on her life.

This is a good example for a female characters costume in our movie, her outfit has an element of symmetry that would be expected in an interview, which gives a true professional impression and will compliment the personality of the character. However this film has two parallel versions of Faith one of faith being on time for her interview and the other is of her being late for the interview. Since the former has been already looked at, we will look at the latter. from the fact that she is late we can induce that she is going to be particularly messy with her appearance , however this is probably not going to be shown consistently because of her personality trait of being well presented, rather her appearing messy at the start and by the time she leaves her house she is tidy.

Olly does not have a much information on him but we can say that he he may have similar traits to Faith, since they are going for the same job. so again a clean pressed suit may be appropriate or just a long sleeve shirt and a tie will suffice. On the train scene however he may be doing something else other than the job interview so casual clothes may be acceptable.

In the next post I will be talking about props research.

Location Research

In this I will be talking about our location research

In film, location is key. Location can change the atmosphere of a scene completely, for example, for our film, it would need to have a happy atmosphere when they meet at the train station, it would have to be open with nice looking streets to create the right atmosphere for a romance film, if it was a run-down neighbourhood with graffiti everywhere it wouldn’t create a happy feeling.

For our film, it is set in three different locations; the first location we will see is the inside of our female characters house, mainly her bedroom, her alarm clock would be the first thing we’d see, but it would turn into our establishing shot of her bedroom. The two pictures below are from existing media products that will look similar to our short film, one is from pretty woman (alarm clock) and the other is from p.s I love you.

This is the bedroom that we would be filming in, throughout the film we would be seeing other parts of the protagonists house, such as the kitchen and bathroom. From the picture of the bedroom that we have, we can tell that it is a very gender neutral room, however it is a large room which would suggest that the protagonist is from a  wealthy background, this would mean that the house would be large to match the room, so it would represent wealth.

Our next location would be where our character is rushing to the train station to get to her interview on time. Below is a piece of existing media that will look similar to our location, it is a shot from the film The Tourist.

This is the location that we will be filming at, this location is important because this is where our characters will meet for the first outcome. The train station would represent that the town is connected or linked to larger places and our characters are able to commute with ease.

Our final location will be the office, for her interview, this is also an important location because it is where our character will meet in the second outcome. The picture below is from an existing piece of media, a film called, the pursuit of happiness.

The representation in the image shows that they will be in a formal interview and will have to be professional.

After this I will be posting the costume research.

Script research and film script

In this post I will be talking about scripts and our film script.

A script is created by screenwriters and shows the action and dialogue of characters in a film, with short films the script would contain less dialogue and more action since theres less time to use for large speaking roles.

For our script our writer James had to write two parallel timelines which intertwine, these can be seen also in our animatic and storyboard.

In the next post I will be talking about our location research.

Film Treatment

In this post I will be talking about film treatments and our film treatment.

I am now going to be creating a film treatment, before typing this up I first needed to research what it entails, how it is laid out on a page, the conventions and the format.

Firstly I checked out the layout of most film treatments and I found some images of treatments which helped show how a treatment should look but i also found a website which contains treatments from existing movies like 'Terminator' these treatments were much longer than the one I was going to produce as they are all for feature length films rather than shorts. Here are some of the pictures of the treatments and the URL for existing treatments.

The next part that was looked at was the conventions of a film treatment. Jordan created a spider diagram to show some of them.

Next is our own film treatment that jordan wrote, for our short film, Fate, Love, Destiny

Also, here is an audio recording of our film treatment

Finally here are some conventions underlined with our own film treatment explained

In the next post I will be talking about scripts and our film script.

Storyboard

In this post I will be talking about our film storyboard.

This is the storyboard for our film, Love, Fate, Destiny. A storyboard is a very important piece in and can speed up the filming process as it shows you a frame by frame guide of which shots you need. It also prevents shots from being from forgotten.

In the next post I will be talking about film treatments and our film treatment.

TAP

In this post I will be talking about our preferred target audience for our film and comparing our film to others of the same genre.

As we did in AS we must look at our target audience and establish our media profile. This would entail demographic, age and other general information. This post will also show our thoughts on the age classification the reasoning behind it. We will also look at other films from PearlandDean.com (which provide statistics for other films) to compare with our demographics. The target audience is typically going to be 'teenagers' more specifically, teenage girls ranging from 12 - 18 my reasoning would be that there is no reference to swearing or any forms of violence, which is not following typical romance conventions anyway. The genre of our film is romance, automatically making it a preference for girls but of course not exclusively. Below is the demographics list:

If I allocate the target audience to a particular demograph it would be E and/or D since the age range would match the student description, also they are more than likely going to be unemployed, at the very least be doing part time work. Here we will look at the target demographics for other films from PearlandDean.com particularly looking at films within the romance genre so the statistics can relate to our own film.

Our Target Audience Profile

This is Amy; she is a 16 year old, white female. She enjoys any film which involve romance such as Safe Haven and The Vow. She is currently a student studying her A-levels. She lives with her family  and spends most of his spare time seeing friends. She has accounts on both Facebook and Twitter in which she uses on a regular basis. She loves going to the cinemas with friends and her preferred music taste is pop.

Safe Haven

Safe haven is a romance like our own short film and as you can see, 76% of the audience were female and 62% of the total audience were aged between 15 and 24 however demographics show that 36% of this audience were C1 meaning they were above white collar workers.

The Vow

As you can see, 64% of this audience were female however there is slightly more male members here. 43% were aged between 15-24. This film would match our films target demographics more closely as 39% of the people who watched this film had been categorised as DE. Meaning it is most likely that the majority of this audience were teenage girls who were students.

In the next post I will be talking about our storyboard for our film.
